AS101 is an immuno-modulator experimental drug invented and developed by Professors Albeck and Sredni. AS101, Ammonium-trichloro (dioxoethylene-0,0’) tellurate, is a white crystalline, synthetic, low molecular tellurium compound bonded to an organic moiety.

The empirical formula of AS101 is C2H802NCl3Te and the molecular weight is 312 daltons. The chemical structure of AS101 is shown below.

Out of all the series of compounds, which were synthesized and screened for their ability to stimulate proliferation and lymphokine production by lymphoid cells, the compound with the highest activity, AS101 was chosen for continued studies in vivo and in vitro
The compound has been shown to have beneficial effects in diverse pre-clinical and clinical studies, with minimal toxicity.

AS101 was tested in phase II studies with AIDS patients and with cancer patients treated with chemotherapy combined with AS101. The AS101 passed the necessary toxicity and compatibility tests and was approved for Human Clinical Studies in the USA (under two INDs permits issued by the FDA and numerous IRBs), in Israel (in numerous medical centers, both by the relevant Helsinki committees and the Ministry Of Health), in France, Mexico, and Brazil – in all cases by all required competent authorities. In addition, the AS101 in ointment and spray formulations is currently used for dermatological indications in additional (already approved) human clinical studies in Israel, to be followed soon in other countries.

The previous conducted trials have created a solid safety record and a CMC package for the AS101 compound, which enable a relatively quick and very cost effective launch of clinical trials.

The SAS is the company’s second generation synthesized tellurium compound. The SAS compound exhibits improved stability in aqueous solutions relative to the AS101. SAS exhibits a protease inhibition profile similar to that of AS101, but with different selectivity within the cysteine protease family. The activity of SAS is currently being studied in vitro.
