AS101 was shown to have an antiviral effect in-vitro and in-vivo and also in a recent clinical trial. AS101 was primarily shown to have an in vitro anti-viral effect, specifically by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase activity and thus inhibiting replication of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus type1.

Primarily, AS101 treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) - infected peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), resulted in substantial inhibition of virus production. AS101 has also proven to be an anti-viral agent in a recent clinical trial, studying the effect of AS101 on cutaneous viral warts, caused by Human papillomavirus (HPV), most commonly located on the skin and genitalia. The AS101 cream was found to be an effective topical therapy for HPV genital warts characterized by a relatively short duration of treatment, minimal side-effects and a low recurrence rate.
Recently, it was shown that AS101 has an antiviral effect on West Nile virus (WNV) and inhibits virus entry to the cells
